The GREENBITES TEAM of Digital Society School Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) is currently working with the Facility Services (FS) unit of UvA/HvA. Their challenge is to develop a tracking and monitoring system for FS Food and Drink which will be used in measuring the level of Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) emissions particularly CO2, in the food and supply chain of the campus. FS food and drink of HvA is responsible for more than 30 restaurants, over 15,000 personal orders in banqueting, and more than 360 vending machines across the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and HvA campuses. This monitoring solution, when developed, will be progressively evolved and implemented across all the campuses of UvA/HvA.

The goal of this project for FS is to enable the transition to sustainable food as part of the sustainability program and ambitions of the University of Amsterdam (UVA) and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS).

This project is located within the UvA/HvA ecosystem, and the target groups are the food contractors and FS of UvA/HvA. The indirect players in this group are the staff and student community, as well as visitors to the campus who are involved in the daily purchase and consumption of food sold across these campuses. This is quite important as the transition from animal protein to more sustainable alternatives will require the participation of every group concerned.

Finally, the relevance and future perspective of this project are enormous:

FS will be able to monitor in real time, how much CO2 is generated in the restaurants across all campuses.

The results generated e.g CO2 benchmarking will be useful for decision making concerning food sustainability on the campus by stakeholders viz FS, University Governing Boards, the GO team, etc.

The overall health and wellbeing of the university community will be boosted from better food choices that will be made by everyone.

Food waste will be significantly reduced, and UvA/HvA will be able o consolidate on reducing the impact of climate change.
