Our team’s focus is on creating mindful, ethical, and human-centred approaches to digital legacy. Specifically, our project is investigating how digital footprints—particularly those left behind by individuals who have passed away—can be managed in ways that honour memory while also minimizing environmental impact. With the rise of cloud storage and social media platforms, issues surrounding data ownership and further complexity, often leave caregivers, family and friends uncertain about how to handle the digital remains of their loved ones.
Although healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in helping individuals manage their digital legacies, these conversations are rarely part of standard clinical practice. As a result, there is limited understanding of how people wish for their digital data to be treated after death. In this project, we explore how patients, caregivers and loved ones can be better supported in managing digital legacies, considering practical methods for managing digital assets and ways to memorialise the (soon-to-be) deceased in the digital world.
